With such a positive response to our popular Sensible Pro theme, we have taken your input and suggestions and made it even better!

We all take inspiration for our web design from other sites. A good webmaster is always on the lookout for interesting designs and functionality on all the webpages they visit. How often have you stumbled across an article or a blog where you’ve said to yourself “I want that on my site!” One of the most important changes you can make to your site design is tweaking the font. You’ll be amazed at how much it impacts the readability of an article. Coupled with the font size, the line height, and the color, you can transform the perusal of your site from a chore to a pleasure.

In my opinion, one of the most interesting fonts available to webmasters today is called “Roboto”. Initially developed by Google for use with the Android operating system, it’s now available freely for anyone to use. In this article, I’ll show you how to implement the Roboto font on your website, and in the process also teach you the general process for incorporating any font. The process is made particularly easy for us due to Google’s webpage which automatically generates the required code.

Finding the Roboto Font Online

To start off, visit the Google fonts URL on any web browser. This is a centralized database of open source fonts maintained by Google for anyone to use. You can see in the screenshot below that the left-hand side provides a number of parameters by which you can drill down to the specific font you want.

image08

You can narrow it down by the font family, the appearance, as well as the script. Or you can just specify the exact font you’re looking for by typing in the name of the font in the search box at the top left-hand corner. In this example, I’ve typed in “roboto” and its returned three results. These are displayed in the right-hand pane so you can immediately recognize the appearance. In our case, I’m looking at the very first result. Since we’re only interested in getting the code and nothing else, hop over to the right-hand side of the screen where you will see a “Quick-use” button sandwiched between two others.

image04

Clicking this takes you to the font selection and code generation screen. Each font has a number of sizes and formatting. You can choose any one or all of them, but there is a caveat. The more number of options you select, the more time it will take for the fonts to load on your website. To help you with this, there is a “Page Load Meter” on the right-hand side of the screen.

image02

As you select more and more font options, the needle will show you the impact on the webpage speed. Try and keep it within the green section as far as possible – a pretty looking site is great, but the value of a fast loading site can’t be overestimated!

Once you have your fonts selected, scroll down to get the code. There are two separate sections for this. The first consists of a resource that needs to be placed in the header of your WordPress blog, where is the second gives you the CSS style for inclusion.

image01

Let’s see how to incorporate both of these.

Incorporating the Fonts

To start off, you need a way to include header code into your blog. There are several ways to do this. You can modify your WordPress theme file directly, but this has a terrible disadvantage. Every time your theme updates, your custom code will be wiped out. Other options include developing a child theme, but it’s beyond the scope of this article. If you just want a simple and scalable solution, install a plug-in such as “Insert Headers and Footers”. It allows you to place arbitrary code into your WordPress blog without the danger of your changes getting wiped out by a subsequent update. Whatever method you choose, copy and paste the code from the Google font website as shown below:

image07

This takes care of the first piece of code pointing to the source of the Roboto font file. Now we need to include the CSS. Once again, we face the same problem. You can always modify your style.css file directly, but these changes will get wiped out on an update. The best solution I’ve found is to install the WordPress Jetpack plug-in. Chances are you already have it on your site since it has a huge number of features, and it incorporates the functionality of several plug-ins into one. Once you have it installed in your site, go to “Edit CSS” under the “Appearance” menu on the left-hand side of WordPress.

image00

In the resulting screen, copy and paste the following code which borrows from the second code box of the Google fonts screen:

p {
font-family: ‘Roboto’, sans-serif;
}

image03

This little snippet specifies that all “paragraphs” must follow the Roboto style when available. Save the CSS page. It’s now time to see whether our changes have had any effect.

Here is a sample page of my site before the installation of Roboto:

image05

And here’s what it looks like after:

image06

You can easily make out that the font style has changed. You can use this method to replace your existing font with any of the 667 available fonts on the Google website. Even if you don’t find the one you’re looking for, you have a broad idea of what you need to do to incorporate your own custom fonts into WordPress. Happy designing!

2014 has come and gone, and with it, the amount of WordPress users keeps getting bigger and more demanding. In 2014, WordPress users rose to over 75 million users (over 60% of websites using a CMS), with those numbers rising by the hundreds of thousands every day. ModernThemes takes look at the some of the trends we can expect to be seeing in 2015.

Storytelling

Content is always the key to a good website, but content that tells a beautiful story will be the key to a great website in 2015. More and more websites are adopting a storytelling model for their website, so naturally, WordPress users will have a strong demand for WordPress themes which offer a storytelling feature that is easy to create, and not painful to edit.

With WordPress users getting more savvy over the years, interesting designs are easier to create in admin panels. Bloggers will be able to select templates and posts for their content and trust that designers and developers selected the code that will come together to tell a story every website will be wanting.

ModernThemes suggests Trail by ThemeTrust as an example of a WordPress theme that is beautiful in design and powerful in storytelling.

Readability

If you have a WordPress-powered website, there is a really good chance that you are blogging with it. Over the past year, it has become apparent that especially with users viewing on mobile devices, the most important factor is that they can actually read the content. Readable text affects how users process the content of the website, while poor readability scares readers away .

WordPress themes with exceptional readability will allow users to efficiently read and take in the information in the text. Whether viewing on a mobile device or desktop, it is of the utmost importance that the text can be read. It is the job of the WordPress developer to create an experience which selects the best text and spacing for the user’s eyes. When WordPress released their yearly theme with the last 4.1 update, the year of readability for WordPress themes and blogs began.

ModernThemes suggests Swell by ThemeTrust as an example of a modern WordPress theme which has great content and superior readability.

Full Screen Video Background

HTML5 video background WordPress themes have been around for a couple years now with varying degrees of success. The rise of mainstream websites using full screen video background for their websites will only grow the desire to purchase WordPress themes with a video feature.

While being mindful of load times and mobile devices that can play video backgrounds, it is no secret that this can be a powerful feature to make your WordPress website stand out. Video background allows the user to showcase their work or interests with more engaging content. The visual presentation of video offers a promotion of creative skills that still content cannot measure up to.

ModernThemes suggests Piccolo by ThemeJug as an example of a modern WordPress theme which captures the power of full screen video.

Designing WordPress Themes From Scratch https://modernthemes.net/designing-wordpress-themes-scratch/ https://modernthemes.net/designing-wordpress-themes-scratch/#respond Wed, 26 Nov 2014 21:18:10 +0000 https://modernthemes.net/?p=1540 If you like our themes (and we hope you do), our process may work for you as well.

The post Designing WordPress Themes From Scratch appeared first on Modern Themes.

]]>
If you have ever tried to create a WordPress theme from scratch, it should be painfully obvious how much work the entire process can be.  A good design can be trumped by poor usability, while many phenomenally coded themes are ignored due to lack of appeal. If you like our themes (and we hope you do), keep reading, our process may work for you as well.

Pick a niche and stick with it.

WordPress themes that “do it all” or advertise themselves as “the last WordPress theme you will ever need” are like a wheel to me at this point – don’t even try to reinvent them. Not only  are there countless options available, the amount of bloat and excess coding and files in these types of themes is just plain irresponsible. Instead, pick a niche market to create a theme for. Do a little research and include the types of functionality your market would benefit from. For example, a theme for fundraising or charities may include a donation counter. By choosing and mastering a certain niche, it makes it far easier for the user to imagine using your theme, while making it perfectly efficient to install and populate.

Get a 1,000 hour head start.

Save yourself a ton of time and frustration by downloading your starter theme from Underscores.me

This incredible free resource is the starting point of all of our WordPress themes. It is just the right amount of well-coded, lean, modern wordpress templates, CSS, and JS to get you started without getting in your way.

Choose your includes.

Before we develop our themes, we decide what types of additional functionality will be required to accomplish our design goals. For example, will the theme need a slider, animation, push menu? The options are limitless, but should be wisely chosen, as we are trying to fight bloat at any cost. Planning your includes ahead of time will help you reduce the amount you use, and organize them properly within your theme. Remember, you may not need them on every page, so only enqueue them on the template files which require them.

Develop. Test. Repeat.

The most time consuming part of theme creation, proper development sets apart the good from the great. Theme development is much more than page templates, it is ease of installation, customization, and overall user experience. What good is a theme if users struggle to input their own content? This is our main focus while creating all of our themes. We (and the people over at WordPress) strongly discourage the use of custom admin panels, masses of built in theme options, and changing the core of a users install. It is best practice to include all of your theme options right in the WordPress theme customizer. You can do pretty much anything with it that you can with a custom admin panel, and your theme won’t ever fall apart as WordPress continues to grow and update. After you test and tweak your theme, there is just one thing left to do.

Validate your theme.

Make sure your theme is up to WordPress standards. We use Themecheck.org, a validation service for WordPress where visitors can upload themes and templates. The service will analyze the files and run tests to verify security and code quality, as well as give each theme a quality score along with a list of alerts and warnings. Once you are validated, you have successfully created a wonderful WordPress theme.

Good Luck!

Don’t lose everything if you change your theme

This is the vision that Modern Themes was started with and what we strive for with every future release. Modern Themes makes it our effort to keep Theme functionality and Plugin functionality separate. By keeping plugin functionality minimal, we can concentrate on delivering user-friendly WordPress themes that are beautiful in design. We understand the draw that themes packed with endless options have, but it is only in the end that users realize they use less than half of the loaded functionality. Users are left with a bloated site that is frustrating to manage and slow on load times. These are issues that can ruin a WordPress experience.

Modern Themes steers away from developing themes that offer massive options panels with unlimited everything. Instead, we concentrate on the design of themes, and what works for the market or niche. We strive for best practices and offer all our theme options in WordPress’ native customizer. We encourge our theme users to pick the right plugins, as plugins will drive a WordPress site’s functionality. By developing our themes to be plugin-friendly rather than plugin-heavy, users can download our themes for the design and simplicity, then choose what additional functionality they may need down the road.

While WordPress started as a personal blogging platform, it wasn’t before too long that some very wise people discovered the power that the platform held as a Content Management System (CMS). Picking a solid CMS is a very critical factor to an online business toolkit, as it gives the user the power to control their own content. There are many great CMS options out there to choose from, but as a business owner, there are none as dynamic and adaptable as WordPress.

WordPress is the most capable CMS for users at this moment. Squarespace and Wix are user-friendly options that let the user create their own site based on ready-made templates, but in the end, those templates are are very limiting, especially for a business. WordPress is utilized by more than 61% of all websites that use a CMS and 23% of all websites overall. Some of the biggest companies and businesses using WordPress are:

  • The New York Times
  • CNN
  • Forbes
  • GM
  • UPS
  • eBay
  • Sony
  • Best Buy

Why should my business use WordPress?

WordPress: It’s Free!

WordPress is an open-source project, which means that the kind people at WordPress are constantly updating and evolving. For a business owner, that means they are free to use it for any business, any project, no matter the size or scope, and all at no cost. Updates are sent directly to the WordPress admin panel, so the user will be notified when one is available for upgrade or when a critical update has been installed.

WordPress is easy to use

Having to worry about time spent managing a website can take away from what a business cares about most: the bottom line. Successful businesses spend their time on products and services, so using something as easy as WordPress helps level off the time spent online. A WordPress website can be up-and-running within minutes of purchasing hosting and buying a WordPress theme. There are numerous online training videos and tutorials which can teach any user with a basic knowledge of content creation (if a user can manage Facebook, they can use WordPress) how to populate their posts and pages with ease.

The user administration panel and user interface aspects are very easy to navigate and include many visual aspects to guide users in the right direction to populate a powerful website. As we covered above, WordPress is always improving their user interface options with each new release, and each update makes it easier because it is also free.  That is the best kind of update for a growing business.

Endless Look and Feel

The WordPress option that we at Modern Themes have based our lives around is one that can be extremely helpful to a Business that likes to play with different choices for the way their website looks. WordPress has endless design templates called Themes, which makes it easy for companies to switch the look and feel whenever they want to.  While there are a number of free themes, people in the business world generally know that free can be a synonym for “limited”. Premium WordPress themes offer more unique looks and modern designs. Take a look at Modern Themes’ Business theme for our idea on how WordPress theme should look and feel.

Easy SEO and Social Media Integration

In today’s business world, the two hottest trends of a successful web presence are Search Engine Optimization (SEO) and strong social media. WordPress themes are usually developed with SEO best practices in mind to help the website with a good strong first impression when being crawled by search engines.  For additional SEO help, WordPress has plugins which have been designed to help businesses with SEO, namely the very popular All-In-One SEO Pack or SEO by Yoast.

Like the SEO plugins, WordPress is packed with social media plugins which help manage new updates to popular social media sites like Facebook, Twitter, Google Plus, LinkedIn, etc. Business are using social media more than ever to up their online presence, and even simply including  social media icons can help people connect to an interactive web experience for a business. All of our WordPress themes at Modern Themes come complete with a social media section where a business can add their social media URLs and the icons will populate to designated areas of the website.

WordPress it is

With all of these points factored together, a business cannot go wrong with using WordPress. With just a few hours and few dollars, any business can get started with the most powerful and versatile CMS on the planet. Modern Themes offers a few different options for WordPress theme layouts that we believe can be utilized by any type of business for their first WordPress-managed website.

A recent Forbes article by Jacquelyn Smith titled, Why Every Job Seeker Should Have a Personal Website, And What It Should Include, inspired the Modern Themes team to deliver a professional WordPress theme to those who want to take advantage of their own personal website. Personal is the perfect way to present a professional online presence in order to land a dream job.

As the article states, “56% of all hiring managers are more impressed by a candidate’s personal website than any other personal branding tool—however, only 7% of job seekers actually have a personal website.” With Personal, we make it simple for the business professional looking to gain an advantage in the job market to create their own website.

personal-action3

After discussing the main points of the Forbes article, we pinpointed the details that are essential for a simple, professional website. The Personal WordPress theme combines biography, experience, background, contact and details sections in an elegant presentation that will give any job seeker a leg up on their competition. We developed the theme so that anyone can set up their website in under a half an hour, populate it with attractive images and solid content, and finish with a website that looks good on any device which hiring managers may be viewing it on.

“The bottom line is, it’s a great idea to create an online presence now that you own and maintain yourself so you’ll be ahead of the curve when everyone else is rushing to catch up with this trend.” With Personal and WordPress, job seekers can make sure that they don’t fall behind and lose out on a job they’ve waited and worked so hard for. It won’t get any easier to get ahead and stay ahead.

One of the best pieces of advice we ever received in our lives was “keep it simple”.  To some users, it may sound like giving up or giving in, but at the end of the day, it will always comes down to that.  It’s taking what could be complicated and breaking it down for everyone to understand. Some of the world’s biggest problems have often times been solved by the simplest of solutions.

Never has this phrase been more true than in the world of web technology, especially WordPress Themes. In a field which can be extremely overwhelming to many users, we as developers have to remember to keep it simple for the rest of the internet. If it’s a good enough saying for Steve Jobs to found Apple on, then I would think it would be good enough advice for any of us to follow.

Recently, we were doing some research and came across a very interesting article on WPTaven.com titled, “Why WordPress Theme Developers Are Moving Functionality Into Plugins” by Sarah Gooding. This article perfectly sums up why WordPress themes are getting out of hand with bloated options and drowning in wasteful plugin functionality. One of the main issues which made us step into the world of theme development was the overindulgence of plugins in themes.  We need to remember what made us all fall in love with WordPress: how simple it was to create a powerful and attractive website or blog.

In Gooding’s article, she sums up our vision perfectly by stating, “When it comes to theme options, the cold, hard truth is that not everyone is a designer. There is no ultimate visual layout builder or unlimited color chooser that will magically make you into a designer. If this is something you can recognize about yourself, then you may want to steer away from themes that offer massive options panels with unlimited everything. Instead, opt for design-specific themes that follow best practices and offer a few options using WordPress’ native customizer.”

This is the vision that Modern Themes was started with and will be what we will strive for in the future. Modern Themes makes it our effort to keep plugin functionality minimal and concentrate on delivering simple WordPress themes that are beautiful in design. We understand the draw that plugins have when users see their power. It is only in the end that they realize they use less than half of the plugin functionality in themes, and are left with a bloated site that is hard to navigate, with very slow page load times. These are issues that can ruin a website experience.

Modern Themes does not hate plugin functionality. In fact, plugins have helped us become better developers by teaching us about user experience. We are just encouraging our theme users to pick the right plugins, not each and every plugin. By developing our themes to be plugin-friendly rather than plugin-heavy, users can purchase our themes for the design and simplicity, then choose what additional functionality they may need down the road. We will always offer plugin suggestions to our themes based on what the theme could used for, but we will never push our users to have something they don’t need.

Keep it simple.
